origin story
Story of Lassie
Lassie was a Dorset Dog from Lyme Regis and belonged to the landlord of The Pilot Boat Inn, Tommy Atkins. There are many stories to tell about Lassie, and in fact there have been more than one Lassie!
He was a very caring dog and was close to the landlords wife whom suffered from fits of Epilepsy, he would bark to raise the alarm. When the tragedy of the HMS Formidable occurred, The Pilot Boat Inn became the rescue HQ. It was here, once again, Lassie came to the rescue. This time it was to help the able seaman John Cowan. Given up for dead by doctors, Lassie kept him warm by licking his face which eventually brought him back to consciousness.
The story of Lassie and The HMS Formidable can be seen at The Lyme Regis Museum.
